I used to be one of those people that didn’t understand perfume. For one thing, I (as a self-proclaimed super klutz) was never too keen on perusing long aisle ways lined with expensive, fragile objects. I also never understood the price tag; I was appalled by the amount of money people could drop on a smell. There were so many other things I could think to spend the money on.
Then, one day, the unthinkable happened. I got this strange feeling in my stomach: that I wanted a change in my life. Seeing as this happens practically never, I decided to give it a shot. I’d finally run out of body spray (the same scent I’d worn for years) and thought I’d try being a big girl and investing in something nice.
Again, as someone who would probably walk out of a perfume aisle owing thousands of dollars in broken merchandise fees, I opted for shopping online. I realize that this sounds strange, since it is sort of difficult to smell things on the internet, but I was feeling risky. I also got some recommendations from friends and had an idea of what I wanted, so I began.
I clicked on the site and remember being struck by an overwhelming feeling of Oh wow I don’t belong here. I felt like I was walking into Burberry in nothing but a garbage bag. Even though no one could see me, I felt physically out of place. I’d always assumed that something so expensive was too good for me.
But as that feeling hit me, I realized something… Why was it too good for me? Did I feel like the product wasn’t worth the price, or did I feel like I wasn’t worth the price?
It was in that moment that I knew I was doing the right thing. When you buy generic brands and consider yourself “someone that doesn’t do/isn’t worth _____”, you make it true. Every day, you make a decision about who you want to be, about the quality of life you choose to accept. It takes courage to look at yourself and say, “I am worth a $100 perfume.” But you know what? It’s worth it. You know why? Because you feel frivolous and fun and silly and sexy and because YOU are worth it.
Also, it smells really, REALLY good. When you find a scent that makes you want to date yourself, you’ll know it was worth the splurge.
If you’re like me and feeling like indulging a little, I’d really recommend giving it a try. Big stores like Macy’s have great selections, or you can try a store like Ulta that’s especially for fragrances. You can also look for coupons online (Groupon Coupons has a ton) and those can help take the price
